The Dog Chapel - St. Johnsbury, Vermont

This is just a snapshot of a place we stopped along our drive over to Burlington, Vermont. It’s called the Dog Chapel.

Artist Stephen Huneck built the chapel to celebrate the spiritual bond humans have with their dogs. It’s open to both dogs and people alike. The stained glass and carvings are extraordinarily lovely, but the most moving part of visiting the chapel is reading all the tributes and remembrances people have left for their pets.

Anyone who knows me knows that I love animals. I cry when animals die in movies, I cry when I see a fawn dead on the side of the road, I cry when I watch animal planet shows about abused pets. So needless to say, I cried when I entered the dog chapel and took time to read the beautiful words people wrote about their pets that have passed on.

Adam and I left our own contribution on the wall for the two dogs we’ve lost since we’ve been married – Samba and Colby.

If you’re a dog person and happen to be near St. Johnsbury, the chapel is definitely worth a visit.
