We were People by Christa A. Lamb

Posted By on August 15, 2011

We lived in the music
A thundering tribe
Of nomads
Living in one

We roamed
The land like
Lions hunting elk
Learning
Feeling
Understanding
The cycle of
Life—
We lived as
One

We lived by
The turning
Season of
Sun up
Sun down
Digging our
Hands into
The ground we
Grew only what
The earth gave
And we gave
Back in
Thanks—
We lived as
One

See, before we
Were people
With many labels
Our labels were
None—
We were
Born out of
The word with
A name called
Love.

We weren’t
Dictators
Politicians
Lawyers
Bankers
Secretaries of
State or
Directors of
The CIA and
FBI or
Office of
Homeland security

We weren’t
Upper
Middle and
Lower classed into
Labels that
Divide beyond ranking

We weren’t
Homeless because
We all had
A home and
On this home
We lived by
The laws of
The land and
This land lives
Even today by
The laws of
The universe where
There are no labels

However
In our world of
Labels…

We may call him
A faggot

We may call her
A whore

We may call them
Illegals

And you
May call me
Anything
You like

But the truth
Is universal—

Labels divide beyond
Names.

We give
Names in
Honor and in
Love but
Labels come
With judgment and
Preconceived
Notions branded
Into the skin of
Those wearing
This falsified
Identities

And as our
World of
Labels
And illusionary
Power grows
The truth of
Who we are
Gets buried in
The past behind
Year after
Year of
Progress toward
Destruction and
Denial toward
Reality—

We are
Apart of
What we
Can’t escape—

The natural laws of
Here can’t be
Pushed aside to
There and
We can’t
Live above that
Which we are—

We are a part of
Our home
Our earth
And we are
Sharing the
Name of
Life with
All who
Roam this
Home
Today.

We are one.

We are bound to
This truth.

Our past is
The root to
Our survival and
To this past
We must honor
Our name—
We are people.
We are one.
We are
The human
Species

We are not
Doctors
Lawyers
Presidents or
Kings and
Queens or
Evangelical
Pastors and
Preachers
Scientists
And speculators

Or junkies
Prostitutes
Hookers. And
Thieves

Or welfare
Recipients
And social
Security
Collectors

Or stay at
Home moms and
Dads or
Unemployed
Poets and
Painters

No, we are
Human Beings
Living very
Fragile lives
As we
Label others
So we, whoever
We may be,
Can blame and
Place fault
And say they
To them.

Or more cleverly
This label
Of “we” can
Label ourselves
So we can
Rise above those
We label below and
Look down even if
It’s from
Meager heights
To say look
At them
They don’t
Even try to
Rise above
Their label.

We are people
Labeled in hatred
With our roots
Named in love

We were
Named people
When we
Were one

We are now
People
Dividing the
Sum into
Subgroups that
Rip at
Our roots and
Destroy our
Evolution toward
Something
Great.

Before we
Were who
We are—
We were always
Who we
Were meant to be—
One people.

Rise above the labels

Please know me:
I am a human being
With many labels,
But only one name
Christa A. Lamb with
Roots in love.

Before we
Were many…

We are One.

Rise Above in Love.
